GAATES has a number of committees that are in place to support and promote the GAATES Mission and Objectives to promote the understanding and implementation of accessibility of the sustainable built, social and virtual environments round the world.
The Executive Committee is responsible for overseeing the daily and on-going activities of GAATES. The committee consists of the president, past-president, 1st vice-president, 2nd vice-president, treasurer and secretary. The committee reviews applications from candidates wishing to become Country Representatives .Country reps. work with the committee and the GAATES office to organize and/or represent GAATES by at local, national and international events, lectures, workshops or conferences on accessibility. The principal goals of the ICT Committee are to work to implement the principles and objectives of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; develop revenue generating project opportunities, explore programs and project opportunities to apply universal design principles information and communication technologies (ICTs) and to nurture partnerships with existing ICT global organizations. The Committee on Accessible Tourism investigates opportunities to further develop accessible tourism opportunities internationally based on market drivers including new legal requirements, global demographic change and increasing economic value of the accessible tourism market are driving change. The Committee’s goals include identification and elimination of barriers to independent and accessible tourism opportunities. The principle goal of the Accessible Transportation Committee is to capitalize on opportunities to apply the CRPD and universal design principles to transportation facilities and systems around the world whether they be by air, rail, road, water or pedestrian travel. The ATC also identifies barriers to independent mobility of disabled people around the world and works to eliminate those barriers. The Scholarship Awards committee is responsible for making financial scholarship awards to selected individuals studying universal design and accessibility at the university or college level. The good governance committee is responsible for ensuring that the GAATES organization and board meet the requirements of the Canadian Not for Profit Corporations Act (CNFPCA) and are in compliance with the principles of law and good governance. The Finance Committee oversees the GAATES budget, financial operations and results; monitors the adequacy and condition of capital assets; reviews and makes recommendations on capital activities; and appoints GAATES’ signing officers or other financial delegates.
