The Council of Trustees, created in 2014, aims to support the GAATES Board of Directors by providing the financial, moral and technical sustainability necessary to ensure that GAATES is able to continue being a leader in fields of Universal Design and accessibility, and implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD); and to contribute to positive development for persons with disabilities.
Objectives of the Council include cooperation with stakeholders for the implementation of international standards and cooperation with international civil societies, global organizations and other bodies to create global accessibility programs. They also contribute to raising international knowledge related to standards in accessibility and Universal Design and facilitate training, development and certification of qualified persons in the field of disability awareness, Universal Design and accessibility around the world.
The Council is composed of societal leaders, representative of the global reach of GAATES’ activities and membership, who are willing and able to financially, morally, technically and politically support the mission of GAATES. Council members are appointed by the Board of Directors, taking into consideration the recommendations of existing Council members. All GAATES Past Presidents become members of the Council upon completion of their term as President.
Dr. Allam is a respected architect and is currently serving as Vice President of the Saudi Architects Society in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Shuaib Chalklen of South Africa, was the Special Rapporteur on Disability of the Commission for Social Development for the period 2009-2014.
Dr. Victor Pineda is the President of World ENABLED, and a leading global expert on disability rights, policy, planning and design and has worked closely with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, World Bank, United Nations, UNESCO, and UNICEF, among others.
Architect Mukhtar Alshibani the GAATES Past President and is the principal of Almodon Consultancy. He is an active member of the International Union of Architects and represents the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the ISO TC59/SC16 Accessibility and Usability of the Built Environment Standard Committee.
Betty Dion is a Founder and Past President of GAATES, is a member of the Canadian National Building Code Executive Committee, Past Chair of the CSA/CAN B651-M04 Accessibility of the Built Environment Committee, and is the Chair of the Canadian Committee to the ISO TC59/SC15 Accessibility and Usability of the Built Environment Standard.
In order to make an inclusive society a reality, it is necessary to identify and remove barriers to access.
